Conocido como Rh nulo, se describió en 1961 en una aborigen australiana y se debe a una alteración genética que hace que los antígenos, que se utilizan para clasificar los grupos sanguíneos, no se expresen –la sangre tiene 61–.
Los individuos con esta característica comparten con los del grupo 0- una singularidad: ambos son donantes universales, pero solo pueden recibir una transfusión de su mismo grupo. En la localidad británica de Filton, el Laboratorio Internacional de Referencia de Grupos Sanguíneos (IBGRL, por sus siglas en inglés) dispone de una base de datos con los de este reducido club para garantizar que ninguno de sus integrantes que necesite una donación se quede sin ella. La iniciativa cuenta con un grave inconveniente: los poseedores de Rh nulo residen en países tan distantes entre sí como Japón, Brasil, Irlanda o Estados Unidos, lo que dificulta el traslado de una bolsa si se precisa con urgencia. En caso de que alguien con Rh nulo tenga que someterse a una cirugía programada, previamente se le extrae sangre que se almacena –dura 45 días– por si fuera necesaria.
