Morelia, Michoacán, 12 de septiembre de 2019.- La antigua y colonial Valladolid, fue fundada, un 18 de mayo de 1541, sobre el Valle de Guayangareo, por Decreto Virreynal, de Don Antonio de Mendoza, con el propósito de concentrar los poderes civiles y eclesiásticos, a la que se le denominaría, Nueva Ciudad de Mechuacán, nombre al que se opuso, Don Vasco de Quiroga, por considerar, que ese título le correspondía a la Ciudad de Patzcuaro.

Los responsables de trazar y repartir los solares a la población, fueron; Don Juan de Alvarado, Juan de Villaseñor y Luis de León Romano y Don Antonio de Godoy, el encargado de edificar las primeras casas, abrir calles y caminos.

En 1569, el Obispo, Antonio Morales de Molina, logra la autorización para trasladar la Catedral de Pátzcuaro a «Ciudad de Guayangareo», nombre con que se le denominó, hasta 1577, cuando el Rey, Felipe II, ordenó se cambiara el nombre, por el de Ciudad Valladolid.

En 1828, el Congreso Constitucional del Estado de Michoacán, aprueba el Decreto Legislativo, número 77, por el cual, se cambia el nombre a la Ciudad de Valladolid, para en lo sucesivo, llamarse, MORELIA, honrando por siempre a su hijo predilecto, Benemérito de la Patria, José María Morelos y Pavón, El «Siervo de la Nación».
